JazzFM show #4
Some notes on the latest edition of "The Jon Cleary Show"
I have to say, I’m really digging this new radio DJ malarkey. One thing I’m pretty good at, and have had plenty of practice at over the years, is spinning records. On the show this week is some cool stuff from the vaults. Some individual cuts from a pair of Meters: Zigaboo and Leo, and perhaps my favourite Jessie Hill/Allen Toussaint/Fess collaboration, Oogsy Moo. I’ve picked a good-time tune for you from Kermit Ruffins as an example of the fun music that you can expect to hear in the clubs around New Orleans these days— if you’re visiting. Also featured is an old thing by Lloyd Glenn, one of Dr John’s favourite pianists, and some Smiley and Earl King, too. I’m going to have at least one ‘wild card’ selection each week that has nothing to do with New Orleans necessarily, but that is on my radar; this time it’s from BJ, the Chicago Kid. Also, each week I’m going to play you something that is popping on the local AM New Orleans gospel radio channels that the locals here are digging. This week, it’s the Canton Spirituals from Mississippi. There’s other good stuff too, a cool cut from Boukou Groove featuring my old bandmate and soulful guitarist, Big D and something from Little Willie John, king of the funky crooners.
Below are some notes on a couple of the songs I picked for the show:
